well i think that the whale was behaving bad because these whales need their freedom and they are stress out that they are stuck in that little tiny pool so i think thats the problem
on
It’s not the first time it happens, but well I think she was aware of what the whale was capable of doing.
on
Wow……they should just free all of those animals. That’s sad. Do they even know that over 100,000 sea and ocean animals are out of their habitat thanks to SeaWorld? I mean it’s fun to see animals in the water and all that but it’s sad that they had to CAPTURE all those animals. *sad

This is actually footage of an attack on a trainer in 2004 at the Seaworld in San Antonio, TX. The whale is Kyuqot and the trainer’s name is Aibel. He was able to calm the whale down and get out of the water. He did not die from this incident and Ky(the whale) continues to perform at Seaworld San Antonio to date. What happened to Dawn was a tragic accident that can happen with even the most “tamed” wild animals.
on
On your comment Kaitlyn most of SeaWorld’s animals are born in captivity or obtained from places that have captured them and cannot provide proper care for the animals. If they released them into the wild a great majority if not all would die-they have been dependant on humans for too long or all their life. DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU SHOOT YOUR MOUTH OFF!!
on
o dear, such a shame…shame on u shamuuuu! naughty little boy
on
Wow people those tanks are like what 70 feet long and like 70 feet wide? They say how whales are so intelligent and smart then the dumb animal kills a person? And this ain’t the first time it done killed someone it’s like the 3rd. So if the seaworld people were smart they would kill the thing or not let it be around people duh! But no ya’ll are gonna defent the freakin whale? Them people at SeaWorld™ are saying that she slipped and it was her fault, they ain’t even got respect for the lady but I don’t care it’s the whales fault!
RIP Dawn Brancheau.
on
that video is from 2004 it was a male trainer, he was shaken but ok
on
When I first saw this video I thought it looked exactly like the video of the attack in 2004. I just saw the whole video from that attack and this is not Dawn Brancheau.
on
Everyone who says that the whale needs to be freed needs to look at the situation again. The whales at Sea World aren’t taught to hunt. They may have been taken from the ocean, but they are hand fed. They would die from not knowing how to hunt.
on
Just look at Keiko (The whale from Free Willy). They released him into the wild and all he did was swim over the Atlantic to Norway where he stopped and stayed by a tiny town until he died.
I was there myself on vacation and got to see him, although we only saw him for a couple of minutes as the officials didn’t want us to excite him.
Most of these animals can’t make it on their own in the wild and will come back to humans when they start to feel the hunger and whatnot.
Also, it’s not like these animals are in constant pain or anything. A lot of people seem to think that just because the animals are up for public display they are taken advantage of and stuff. Sea World and other parks like them take extremely good care of their animals and most likely the animals are having fun. They get all the food they want, lots of exercise and social contact with both humans and other animals. They don’t even know that people are watching them, they’re just performing tricks they have learned to get the treats they want.
on
wow tht is damn amazing woooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwww
on
The poor animal is not at fault at all. Whales and dolphins of this nature should not be found in captivity anywhere for any reason. I agree that they could not release these animals into the wild at this point, but all shows should be stopped immediately and these animals should be able to live out their years in a place with NO audiences and no more further whales and dolphins should be used for human entertainment.
About time some laws are passed to prevent parks like SeaWrld to continue beyond fishies in an aquarium.
on
This is not the attack that killed the trainer Dawn at Seaworld in 2010. If you look at the whale his fin still stands straight. Tillie’s fin is bent from being in captivity for as long as he has been. If you look at other video of that day it is cloudy oustide. This video was shot on a sunny day. This is not the video of that day.
on
Which part of “wild animal” don’t people understand? This will happen again and again and again and again….maybe it’ll be a few years between attacks, but it will happen again and again and again. Stupid humans. These are the same people who believe you can raise a bear from cubhood and it’ll be your friend. It will be your friend until it decides to eat you one day. Then it won’t be your friend anymore. You’ll be confused and say, “Gee, why did that wild animal decide to eat me? After all I’ve done for that animal, you’d think it would appreciate me.” Again, the words “wild animal” come to mind. I dunno…just my two cents.
on
this is the result of keeping wild animals in captivity and exploiting them. It’s just another big money making business at the expense of animals. It’s cruel. But gosh… it looks soooo cute. Huge, mighty, animal, dominated by a human being. It’s sheer arrogance. If you’re working with wild animals, you risk to loose your life, and that’s what happened.
on
just to outline the whole thing. yes its true that the whales in captivity would not survive in the wild because they are hand fed but they still have all of the same instincts. and the fact that the trainers are getting in a tank with a whale which is called a killer whale is self explanatory. it didnt get that name because theyre friendly safe whales. there is always a risk of them attacking the trainers. however the risk is obviously greater in the wild.
on
This was not the sea world video – they are not even wearing the same uniforms.
on
SI DEJARAN LOS ANIMALES LIBRE Y NO SE METIERAN CON ELLOS ,LOS DEJARAN VIVIR EN PAZ EN SU MUNDO,LAS PERSONAS VIVIERAN SU VIDA Y PROTEJIERAN EL AMBIENTE LES GARANTISO QUE LOS ANIMALES NI CUENTA SE DARIAN QUE LOS UMANOS VIVIMOS EN LA TIERA
on
this is not dawn, this is a man trainer that was attacked a few years ago at sea world,go to you tube and check out the whale attack videos and you will see the same video but more clearly, still having doubts watch again this person has very short hair, a mans haircut dawns hair was long and in a ponytail when she was attacked
on
R.I.P Dawn..I feel for her family as it was a tragic loss, but she loved the orcas, and knew the risks. I also agree on that if Tilikum was released he could die, as he has been dependant on humans for so long. But what would stop them putting him in a sea-pen? When there would be humans feeding him, checking on him, giving him the medical needs that he would need? That way he would have freedom, a place bigger to swim, etc. Just think about it? Seaworld shouldnt think about the money and popularity, they should think of the safety of the trainers and the welfare of Tilikum.
on
you cant just free the animals
most of them a
have been born and bred in captivity and not had to fend for themselves i.e. hunt for food. if you just set them free they will have little chance of survival. they tried setting free willy free but because he had been in captivity and used to having lots of people around and being the centre of attention he died a few weeks after
on
the top vid is not the real thing. this was an attack but its NOT tilikum (clear from the dorsal fin and tilikum’s distinct rostrum like forehead) this trainer suffered only a broken foot.
on
In the video you have posted “Tilikum killing trainer Dawn Brancheau” from the website liveleak, I thought it was him as well the first time I watched it, but I noticed soemthing, while it IS from seaworld based on their wetsuites it IS NOT tillikum, Tillikum’s dorsal fin is humped over, this whale’s is not, Tillikum’s pec fins are some of the largest I have ever seen (he was captured from the wild) this Orca’s is actually smaller than his.
Not Tillikum though.

I DONT CARE WHAT YOU GUYS SAY!!!!! UNTIL ITS YOUR MOTHER, SISTER, DAUGHTER OUT THERE YOU WILL SAY KILL THE WHALE!!!! SO DAMMMIT KILL THAT WHALE. WHAY WILL YOU KEEP AN “ANIMAL” (thats what it is, an animal” IF HE HAS KILLED THREE TIMES. ARE YOU GUYS STUPID OR DO YOU GUYS JUST SOUND STUPID?!?!?!?!?
on
Dawn Brancheau killed a whale. the park took the freedom away from those beautiful animals.
‘They may have been taken from the ocean, but they are hand fed. They would die from not knowing how to hunt.’
There is no BUT! Those parks shouldnt never catch whales, dolphins or other animals. They let the animals breed in captivity.
I dont feel sorry for Dawn and her family. They know the risks. Its happened, its sad. She took that risk. She knew it could be happen.
I’m shame for the humanity, that humans are able to do such terrible things. disgusting.

I truly believe what was said about the whale knowing that he was going to do it and who he was going to do it to.Once a whale is brought into captivity they want all the attention. They don’t want to share their trainer with another whale or sea creature.I have done extensive research on whales as well as dolphins due to going to Sea World when I was a child in Florida. It bothered me that all these gorgeous animals were brought from their home and put in tanks.I believe when a whale is young at these attractions, it may be exciting to them to get all of this attention and be fed,not having to scavenge for food. But once they are older I believe it gets frustrating to them. seeing other mammals come and go,as well as get the attention they feel is theirs. This was a male whale and I also believe that they form bonds with their trainers that we as people do not fully understand.Like a school boy/girl crush in the 3rd grade. Then as they become older it is more like a violent boyfriend/girlfriend type jealousy situation.Whales much like dolphins, truly form a relationship with people and I believe that a lot of the trainers take that too lightly. They see the beauty in people but also form an opinion of them much like we do on first impressions.
Please do not take this at all,as professional advice. It is very much my own opinion ,that I have formed from my years of study,on whales and dolphins as well as other sea creatures. They have always fascinated me tremendously. They truly are beautiful animals and so very much like they human population with the ability to breathe underwater.
I feel terrible for the family of this trainer and my thought and prayers are with her family. But I do believe that when the whale realizes she is GONE,He too will feel a great loss.I don’t believe he was TRYING to KILL her.
We struggle to understand these creatures and all the while they are also struggling to understand us as well. But please also keep in mind they DO NOT capture and keep us in cages!!!!

These are the most ignorant and unintelligent comments I have ever read. People, learn how to write complete sentences with correct grammar and punctuation.
on
while tilikum was involved in the death of the first trainer in Canada he is not solely responsible for her death.the two other whales he was housed with who were both pregnant females attacked her and they tossed the trainer around to each other in their mouths. The second death was a 20 year old homeless man who stayed in the park after closing avoided security and snuck into tilikum tank.he was found floating in the morning and according to the autopsy he had no bite marks.just scratch marks from the bottom of the tank and he died of hypothermia. As for Dawn some report say he grabed her arm and pulled her in others say her ponytail got caught in his teeth or he mistook it for a toy.because of the previous deaths that he has been involved in the trainers do not do wet work with him.And Dawn was not in the tank with him but he got to her anyway. They cannot return him to the wild he would not survive after so long in captivity. But I think they should retire him from shows and keep him away from humans as much as possible.I read that he has resumed the shamu shows and sea world is installing new safety features including a false bottom on the tank that can be raised in under a minute.Lets hope for the trainers sake that it is all enough.

they dont have to capture all the animals. nearly evey animal at seaworld was born in captivity.

free the whales

Oh my goodness I was just looking around on the internet and i saw that a 40 yr old trainer was killed by a whale. I couldn’t belive my eyes, this is so sad these people need to release these animals if they know they are killing people. They are puttibg lives at risk and they aren’t letting the trainers know of the conditions of the whales before going into the water. I say either stop the shows, release the whales, or make sure the whales are safe and healthy.
on
really u have kept him locked up he has had enough leave the whale beeeeeee
on
I think that the whale should be killed. This whale has a history. it doesnt like humans so the zoologist NEED to have a ceremony and have the whale killed because who wants another trainer dead. who wants a loved one dead? nobody so lets do whats right not only for our sake but for the sake of sea world before this happens again. what if they put the whale in a holding cell alone? thats not going to accomplish anything. Wow the whale will be alone for a few days. what happens next time the whale is a little irratated. do us people need to suffer again. RIP DAWN YOU WILL BE MISSED ! YOU WERE MY ROLE MODEL AND I HOPE THAT ONE DAY PEOPLE FIGHT FOR WHATS RIGHT FOR EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE !
on
Honestly, Killing the whale isn’t going to accomplish anything more than just angering the animal rights groups.
The best thing for everyone is to just release him back into the wild where they trapped him to begin with. His instinct, like every other orca, will be to kill anything unknown or threatening, or to kill to eat. It is an instinct that cannot be completely contained in any animal. Even your typical housecat will kill from time to time.
It’s bound to happen again. After all, it doesn’t matter how many precautions are taken, accidents happen, especially with such massive creatures. Three victims in 20 years. May not seem like much, but that’s still three too many.
Dawn wouldn’t want Tilikum killed no matter what. She loved that whale, something very apparent in her interactions with him. The best thing to do would be to let him go in the open ocean, away from human interaction and interference. If he survives, wonderful. If not, it’s survival of the fittest. Let nature take its course either way…

Ok that top video is not Dawn Brancheau. The person in that video is clearly a bald male.
on
True. I just looked it up myself to be certain. It is trainer Ken Peters being pulled by his foot by Kasatka in 2006. He survived the attack.
on
70ft x 70ft, in comparison to the ocean. Come on..really??
on
“According to Liveleak and an italian website, this is Amateur Home Video which captured Tilikum killing trainer Dawn Brancheau (but it is not sure):”
The trainer in the video being attacked is not Dawn Brancheau, nor the whale Tilikum. It is male trainer Ken Peters with whale Kasatka in 2006. Kasatka had Peters by the foot, as you can clearly see in the video. Dawn was grabbed by the hair, dragged under, then drug around the pool first by her arm, then by her torso.
on
I don’t really know wether I agree to keeping whales in captivity or not. I know that if they freed all of the whales now then they’ed die ‘cus they don’t know how to hunt but if they never caught them or bred them into captivity in the first place then that wouldn’t be an issue.
I have seen the real video of Dawn being killed and it is truely horrible.
RIP Dawn x
on
No death video footage has been released, in accordance with both the family, and Sea World’s wishes. Any footage found on youtube depicting an orca attack, is of an unrelated incident involving other trainers. There is footage of Dawn Brancheau’s last moments, but the audience member’s camera pans away from Dawn before she is pulled into the water.’
‘
There is also a very brief shadowy underwater, looping cell phone video, which claims to be an underwater view of the whale at the time of the attack.
Actual video shot by Sea World cameras have never been made public.
